Hands Research

I chose images of hands in a praying sort of position, because the song has some religious themes in it such as it being in an old irish folk style which gives me the impression of it being sung by someone who is a christian also some of the lyrics are religion related such as "Oh, and thanks be to jesus"
I could use imagery of praying hands in one of my images, like showing them severed pair of praying hands to coincide with the lyrics.
Also I have chose an image of a pair of frozen hands combining the same idea as before with "and the touch of frost" which i could use to create a more unique image. One idea that has come from this is maybe one image could be something like a pair severed praying hands covered that might be frosting over or made of ice.
Tree

Death

I've chosen an image of the more traditional symbols of death such as the grim reaper and also an image representing seeing a light at the end of a tunnel when dying.
Graves

The first one could be a good idea for a style from its religious look and traditional style which i think will fit well with the songs irish style.
The second one is more stylized and has a more aery look to it, which could fit in well with the songs sad, dark feel.
The last ones aged worn look may fit in well because when i hear the song this is the sort of mental picture I have.
Grave Song-Storm

Warhol

Andy Warhol's picture of Marilyn Monroe was done by first using a photgraph taken on a publicity shoot. He painted the background with one colour and then silkscreened her face on top of this by enlarging her face and transferring it onto silk. In these pictures she ws either by herself, double or on a grid.
This is the front cover for the band Breaking Benjamin's album phobia. This image seems to have some elements of religion to it from the figures angelic wings and crucified pose. It also seems to have a sort of contradicting theme to it from the style of the symbol below the figure which has a almost pagan style to it. This image will help me in my final video because the band is a similar genre to my song choice and should help me come up with relevant imagery. The part of this image I like most is the general texture of it, how its has been done to look almost like a high speed first person photograph with an almost water damaged look to it. They have used an earthy range of colours giving it an aged, natural look. The effect has most likely done been done by taking a photo of the road with a camera filter then adding the wings and figure as 2 separate layers, then finally applying an addition filter over the top of it all using a digital program.

FF Cover CUB
This is the front cover for the Foo Fighters single Cheer up Boys, this image show a simple black background with a composite image over the front. The objects used are both complementing to each other and have similar but also differing themes. It is half birthday candle and half thermometer both having something to do with heat, a candle is lit producing heat and a thermometer is used to find out the temperature of things. But also a birthday candle is I sign of a celebration, whereas a thermometer is usually associated with illness which is the complete opposite if finding out your ill.

QOTSA Album
Album cover for Songs for the Deaf by QOTSA. It has a simple design using simple shaped objects, and flat colours. I like the minimalist style to it and also the choice of colours used. The style to it seems slightly heavy metal from the style of the font and the combination of curves and points into a slight satanic look. Also there is a sense of irony to it through the actual title Songs for the deaf and also the imagery used like the tuning fork main image which is technically useless for a deaf person.

LATE! Album
This album cover has been done to resemble an advertisement by displaying things like the address and phone number. It uses a simple colour palette of red and yellow for the main part of it, using image manipulation to make the pocket watch seem transparent and also its colour has been changed to match the typography. The title LATE ! has been put over the watch in solid black type to bring more emphasis to the main image. The main theme of the image is time as the imagery of the pocket watch is directly linked to time and also the word late is an expression of time.

Them Crooked Vultures
This shows a ink drawn human body with a black and white photograph vulture head. It has a bright red background with faint lines extending from the vulture figure. The typography is large and blocky and there are black silhouette vultures circling he title and and the figures head.
The meaning of this image could be an ironic view of the band themselves as they are a band made up of members of other well known bands and it could be ironically stating that they themselves are "crooked" vultures who are circling the remains of there other bands, by he way the silhouettes are circling the title and the way its a human with a vultures head. It could on the other hand be them showing there anger at others who do this, using the red background to show there anger and also the lines coming out from the figure could be representing the actual anger using the figure to represent themselves.

QOTSA Video
Music video for the song Go With the Flow, where they have used a range of digital effects to give it a simple but effective look. I like the way they have blocked out most of the surfaces with black and to emphasize to the other areas they have used brighter colours like the white of the eyes and teeth.

THE COW by: Oliver Herford
Along with Youth BY ERNEST M. HEMINGWAY
A porcupine skin,
Stiff with bad tanning,
It must have ended somewhere.
Stuffed horned owl
Pompous
Yellow eyed;
Chuck-wills-widow on a biassed twig
Sooted with dust.
Piles of old magazines,
Drawers of boy’s letters
And the line of love
They must have ended somewhere.
Yesterday’s Tribune is gone
Along with youth
And the canoe that went to pieces on the beach
The year of the big storm
When the hotel burned down
At Seney, Michigan.
The Age Demanded BY ERNEST M. HEMINGWAY
The age demanded that we sing
And cut away our tongue.
The age demanded that we flow
And hammered in the bung.
The age demanded that we dance
And jammed us into iron pants.
And in the end the age was handed
The sort of shit that it demanded.
A Momentary Longing To Hear Sad Advice from One Long Dead BY KENNETH KOCH
Who was my teacher at Harvard. Did not wear overcoat
Saying to me as we walked across the Yard
Cold brittle autumn is you should be wearing overcoat. I said
You are not wearing overcoat. He said,
You should do as I say not do as I do.
Just how American it was and how late Forties it was
Delmore, but not I, was probably aware. He quoted Finnegans Wake to me
In his New York apartment sitting on chair
Table directly in front of him. There did he write? I am wondering.
Look at this photograph said of his mother and father.
Coney Island. Do they look happy? He couldn't figure it out.
Believed Pogo to be at the limits of our culture.
Pogo. Walt Kelly must have read Joyce Delmore said.
Why don't you ask him?
Why don't you ask Walt Kelly if he read Finnegans Wake or not.
Your parents don't look happy but it is just a photograph.
Maybe they felt awkward posing for photographs.
Maybe it is just a bad photograph. Delmore is not listening
I want to hear him tell me something sad but however true.
Delmore in his tomb is sitting. People say yes everyone is dying
But here read this happy book on the subject. Not Delmore. Not that rueful man.

FF Album

This image could be trying to show contrast by combining the elements of future and past, using a ray gun which is a image of future technology and the way its has been made to look aged and old to represent the past. It could be also trying to represent something alien or new by using the image of the ray gun because it is commonly portrayed as an alien weapon especially this ones design, also a Foo Fighter is a WW2 term for a UFO.
For All the Cows

Random picture I found which has relevance to an idea for my image project. The song I chose is For all the cows by Foo Fighters, which is an obvious reason for the picture but also foo fighter is a WW2 term for a ufo. Also Foo Fighters are know for incorporating UFO related things into some of there products and even there record company.

Foo Fighters CD cover

It has a simplistic look to it to focus attention on the centre image and typography were they have used a very light colour for the background to make the darker coloured forground stand out.
Mark Project Song Lyrics
For All The Cows
I'm not about
To blow it now
For all the cows
For all the cows
It's funny how
Money allows all to browse
And be endowed
This wish is true
It falls into peaces new
The cow is you
The cow is you
My kind has all run out
As if kinds could blend
Some time if time allows
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Like it's a friend
I said you're all
A painted doll and it caused
The walls to fall
How far is he
Impatiently
That's as far as far can be
As far can be
My kind has all run out
As if kinds could blend
Some time if time allows
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Like it's a friend
I'm called a cow
I'm not about
To blow it now
For all the cows
It's funny how
Money allows all to browse
And be endowed
And be endowed
My kind has all run out
As if kinds could blend
Some time if time allows
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Everything worn in
Like it's a friend

William Powell Firth

This painting has proberly done in a tradition style using either water colours or oil paints.
This is a good example of what sort of technique I could use for one of my more traditional designs.
Moretto
jean auguste dominique ingres
Frederick Leighton

His work has religous themes to it, specifically christian religion.
This artist could come in useful when designing for Stretched on Your Grave because its seems to have some religous elements to it, with lyrics referencing jesus and oh lord.
